MOVE: Community Imprints

Creative Residency with Ballaro Dance

Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday, September 28, 29, & 30  |  6:30pm - 8:00pm

Hybrid Program: In-person at SUNY Brockport OR Virtual on Zoom

$30 full workshop fee; $12 single session drop-in

(Workshop fee includes ticket to performance event on Oct. 2)

Ballaro Dance invites local Western New York community MOVERS to participate in a three-day creative residency. Each session will begin with a modern dance based warm-up; the group will explore improvisational activities on storytelling, literal and abstract gesture, and personal memories. Participants will be guided to create their own mini-dance about a personal story or memory of their choosing. The dances will be woven together to create a group movement exploration. All levels and abilities are welcome; ages 13+.

Participating dancers have the opportunity to perform on Saturday, October 2 at the SUNY Brockport Alumni House on campus. Performance is not required for participation in the workshop, however, attendance at all 3 sessions is required to perform. There will be one pre-show rehearsal, on site, the afternoon of the event: please plan to arrive on campus at 3:30pm. Signed participation waivers are required for participation for both the workshop and the performance.

The performance event begins at 5:00pm; Community MOVERS will perform throughout the Alumni House garden during the pre-show reception. After their site-specific performance, participants are invited to stay for the duration of the evening and watch the sunset performance by the Company.

Ballaro Dance will share Embedded Memories, an illuminated installation rooted in honoring personal histories through the lens of scars and their images which live permanently on, and inside of, our bodies. Investigating the memories and stories these imprints hold, we can learn from one another and promote community healing. Inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery while highlighting the areas of breakage, golden accents illuminate the stories through numerous lighted lanterns in the installation space and inventive light pieces affixed to the dancers’ bodies.

Participants in the MOVE: Community Imprints Creative Residency will explore their own personal histories and dive deep into their creativity to explore new ways of storytelling through the same process as was done for the making of Embedded Memories. They will have an opportunity to perform unique ideas for an audience and be part of the Ballaro Dance Community of MOVERS!
